Healthy Computer Habits

A happy computer equates to a happy user. It is very important to take good care of your computer to keep it working well. Here are some habits you can develop to ensure that your computer is well taken care of:

Keep liquids and food away from your computer.

Keeping liquids near your computer is a bad idea because it might accidentally spill on your computer. Spilled liquids can cause internal microelectronic and electrical damage which can corrupt or even permanently damage parts of your computer.

Avoid eating while using your computer because crumbs might fall under your keys, which is an open invitation for insects and bacteria.

Use your computer in a place that has constant air circulation.

Computers tend to get ruined when used in enclosed areas because it causes them to overheat. Make sure that the fan of your computer is kept clean to prevent damage by overheating. It is also important to make sure that the temperature of the room is just right. Avoid placing your computer in places that are extremely hot or cold. Your computer operates best in the same temperatures that you do.

Keep your computer in a clean and dust-free room.

Dust and debris can block the fan of your computer. The fans that suck air in to cool down the internal components of your computer can also suck up dirt, which may clog the inside and reduce performance.

Turn off your computer if you’re not going to use it for hours.

Avoid leaving your computer on when you’re not using it. The longer you have your computer on, the more strain you are putting on your computer’s hardware. Avoid wearing out your computer’s hardware right away by making sure it has time to rest.

Make sure your hands are clean when using your computer.

Using your computer with clean hands will lessen the risk of you leaving dirt and other stains on your computer. It will also lessen the wear and tear of your devices’ coating caused by contact with sweat and small particles that can act upon the computer’s exterior.

Regularly scan your computer with a certified, up-to-date antivirus software.

Make sure you have an antivirus installed on your computer to prevent your computer from being infected by virus and other malicious software.

Plug accessory devices into their proper slots.

Accidentally plugging a device into the wrong port can damage your port and prevent you from ever using it again. Make sure you are using the right port before plugging in your device.

Have your computer cleaned annually to remove internal dust.

The dust in your computer can cause issues which could cause your computer to stop working. As your computer gets clogged with dust, the fan that keeps your computer’s circuit boards cool can end up clogged. A clogged fan will cause your computer to overheat and the lifespan of your computer’s internal components will decrease.

Backup your data.

Losing your data can be very stressful. Avoid losing important files by making sure that you back up your files regularly. It would be better to back up your files on a separate device such as a flash drive.
